Women can seek and obtain asylum in the same way as men, for example because of political persecution, but in addition women can be at risk of persecution on specific grounds; for example:
- Gender-related violence
- Rape or sexual violence in war zones
- Female circumcision
- Forced marriage
- Acid attacks
- Human trafficking
The Immigration Service will ask you to fill out an application. It is important to write in the application if your case regards any of the above mentioned forms of female persecution.
During your conversations with the Immigration Service, it is also important that you tell if you think you have been persecuted because you are a female. Once you have explained about the possible abuse, you should mention the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW).
“any distinction, exclusion or restriction made on the basis of sex which has the effect or purpose of impairing or nullifying the recognition, enjoyment or exercise by women, irrespective of their marital status, on a basis of equality of men and women, of human rights and fundamental freedoms in the political, economic, social, cultural, civil or any other field.”
It is important that you explain if you will be in danger when returning, because you are a woman.
